Google AI Mode, explained for business owners
Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience that answers a question in prose with links to sources, instead of a page of ten blue links. You cannot turn it off for everyone, but you can make your business the one it names. This guide explains what AI Mode is, how it chooses what to say, and what you can do to be included.
What Google AI Mode is
AI Mode is a tab and a mode in Google Search that answers a question in prose, with links to a handful of sources, instead of a page of ten blue links. You can keep asking follow-up questions in the same thread.
It sits beside AI Overviews, the AI summary that appears above ordinary results for some searches. AI Overviews is a box on the results page; AI Mode is a whole conversation. Both are built on Google's core Search ranking and quality systems, which is Google's own description.
It launched in the United States first and has since reached more countries and languages; which ones changes often, so check Google's own help pages for your country.
How AI Mode decides what to say
Google has said AI Mode uses a technique it calls query fan-out: one question is broken into several related searches, run at once, and the results are combined into one answer. A question about a bike shop might become searches about shops, reviews, opening hours and prices.
The sources it cites are pages that rank well for those background searches and that answer them plainly. A page that is not indexed, or that Google cannot show a snippet of, cannot be cited.
Google's own guidance, published in May 2026, says there is no special markup, file or writing style for AI features. It points to the basics: being indexed and eligible for snippets, clear page structure, structured data for rich results, a Google Business Profile for local businesses and Merchant Center feeds for products. See Google's generative AI guide.
AI Mode and AI Overviews are not the same thing
AI Overviews appears automatically on some searches; AI Mode is chosen by the user. A business can be named in one and not the other for the same question, because the follow-up searches differ.
Both can name businesses by name without linking to them, which is why being mentioned on other sites matters as much as your own pages. See how to rank in AI Overviews for the Overviews side.
How to be named in AI Mode
Write the pages that answer the background searches: what you do, for whom, where, at what price, with the facts near the top and in text, not images.
Keep the basics in order: indexed pages, no snippet restrictions, working structured data, a complete Google Business Profile with current hours, categories and photos, reviews that mention the service.
Be present on the pages AI Mode already cites for your kind of question: local directories, review sites, comparison articles. Vasukai's Sources page shows which sites the assistants cite for your questions, so you know where a mention counts; the free check shows whether AI Mode names you today.
Can you turn AI Mode off?
There is no setting that removes AI features from Google Search for everyone. A searcher can choose the Web filter under the search box to see classic results only, and can simply not open the AI Mode tab.
For a business the better question is not how to switch it off but how to be the business it names, because a growing share of customers will read the answer and go no further.
How to check where you stand
Ask AI Mode the questions your customers ask, in your customers' words and from their country, and read who it names. Do it again a week later; answers change.
Vasukai checks Google AI Mode and AI Overviews alongside ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, DeepSeek and Sarvam, on a schedule, and shows the trend per assistant. Plans from $19 a month; the free check needs no card.
